The Mahābhārata (XII.262.46) and Manusmṛti (X.84) describe a plough as consisting of an iron blade driven into a piece of wood (kāṣṭham ayomukham). Vasiṣṭha (II.35) praises plough as being Kalyāṇanāsika, which , according to the commentator, refers to the ploughshare piercing the field deeply. There are some indirect references suggesting metallic ploughshares⁹.
