The actual practice about the use of manures is best recorded in the Haracarita (p.65). Bāṇa gives a very graphic picture of heaps of old and rubbish things together with cowdung (purāṇapāmsūtikirakārīṣakūta), brought in carts, being applied for the improvement of fields that had become weak in their fertility properties.
