Panini mentions two divisions of town: Udicyagrāma and prācyagrāma viz. Kauśāmbi, Taksaśilā, etc. according to him most important parts of the town were; moat (parikhā), rampart (prākāra) and gate (dvār); the latter were named after the cities towards which they opened.
