Among these forts, Kalanjar was the most important, a sort of heart of the military might of the kingdom. It is a hill more or less detached from the main Vindhya ranges and stands to a height of 245m above the surrounding area. The plateau on top is oblong in shape and the fort wall runs all around it, measuring 6.4 km in length. A number of gates, loop-lines, bastions are encountered in the ascent to the top but these were in all probability additions during the Islamic period.
