Some medieval temples of Western India had a complex type of śikhara, clustered by a number of aṅgaśikharas (subsidiary spires) whose minimum number was four and which increased by a successive addition of four numbers. The Samarāṅgaṇa-sūtradhāra and the Aparājita describe a variety of Meru edifice with a hundred subsidiary spires while the former text discusses a variety with as many as 256 subsidiary spires.
