In the preceding pages we have seen the application of various types of water-lifting devices with different names varying with the area of cultivable land in the light of literary and epigraphic evidences. We shall speak of them in detail further on. Only selected devices and techniques have been dealt here with a view to focus attention on the technological achievements of the ancients in this obscure but important sphere of activity. Technically speaking, there can be no doubt about the evolution of devices. On the basis of all available evidences and references, the methods of mechanisms can be arranged and reconstructed under three broad heads. They are as follows:
