An inscription (*SII*, XVII. No. 170, *ANRIE*, No. 150, 1904) of Jaṭāvarman Sundarapāṇḍyadeva mentions fields watered with the aid of *ettam* and *eḍā*. It is thus evident that the *eḍā* was one of the simplest contrivances handled by the application of human labour.
