A presentation of the subject covered under the title would necessarily be tentative rather than exhaustive for several reasons. Since we would start with pre-historic India, the period under coverage is indefinite in the beginning. The end of the period is also indefinite since there are controversies as to when the ‘ancient’ period in India ended: the decline of the Gupta empire, the death of Harṣavardhana or the advent of Islam in India (we accept the last, i.e. the ‘medieval’ period being assumed to start at 1200 A.D.).
