The three sites of Chopani-Mando, Mahagara and Koldihwa are located on the river Belan some 77-85 km south-east of Allahabad. During the epipalaeolithic period (around 17000-23000 BC), only chert was used for tool-making while in the succeeding phases even chalcedony, agate, carnelian, jasper, quartz etc., available in the Kaimur ranges, were introduced in the lithic industry. During this advanced mesolithic period at Chopani-Mando, a number of tools such as anvil, hammer stone, ring stone, rubber stone, muller etc. were made and used.
