THE three ancient mounds of Chanhu-Daro are situated a little over half-a-mile south of the modern village of Jamal-Kirio near Sakrand in the Nawabshah District of Sindh. The left bank of the river Indus is now twelve miles distant, but in the third millennium BC, the river or a branch of it flowed close beside the city.
