The correlation between the archaeological data with the historical or traditional is not a straight-forward task. However, the eminence of Taxila since the Early Historical Period is quite evident. Darius of Persia and Pradyota of Ujjain sent their armies to Taxila. The famous physician Jivaka, who was contemporary to Gautama Buddha, had received his training in Takṣaśilā or Taxila which was a seat of learning and a centre of medicine and surgery. The Persian and Greek influences in Taxila were evident even before Alexander's invasion. We have referred to the Kuṣāṇa era surgical instruments found at Taxila.
