The Sumerians and the Egyptians were the earliest traders in Indian commodities. The bas-reliefs of the temple of Deir-el-Bahari at Thebes describe “the abundant booty loading the vessles of Pharaoh containing Indian goods: elephants’ teeth (ibha-danta or ivory), gold, precious stones, sandalwood and monkeys”.
