The Roman aureus and denarius coins were current throughout Western India, and strongly influenced the Kuṣāṇa and Kṣatrapa coinages. The Kuṣāṇas used to melt and recast the coins with their emblems. In South India however, these exchange commodities were often directly used as legal tenders in the local market. That explains plentiful findings of Roman coins in South India.
