Brasses containing up to 36 per cent zinc are known as α- brasses, which undergo easy cold work. Brasses containing more than 46 per cent zinc are brittle. With zinc content between 36 to 46 per cent, we have α + β brasses which are lighter, harder and more suitable for casting statuary.
