Zinc ore was being mined at Zawar and brass produced at Taxila before the Greeks and Chinese entered the country and learnt about the techniques. Much later, the Europeans became aware of zinc as a separate metal, although they had been making cementation brass by direct reduction of calamine with copper ore.
