have provided evidences of Pre-Nalanda brass icons in India. Seven standing Buddhas were received by the Archaeological Survey of India as a treasure trove from a field in the district of East-Nimar, Madhya Pradesh. Two images were analysed and found to be made of brass with 26-27 per cent zinc. These images were dated fifth-sixth century AD. Metallographic study confirmed that these statues were cast in a hot mould by the lost wax process under normal cooling rates and as such no annealing had been done on the object. The findings of Bisht et al. (1981-82) confirm the hazard of dating an icon on the basis of its zinc content or elemental analysis.
