v1.c28.s8.t5.23

The practice of gilding in India was firmly established around the Gupta Period. The 84 cm tall standing Mañjuśrī from Mahasthan, Bogra district, Bangladesh was described by Majumdar (1926) and Saraswati (1962) as gold-plated, probably fire-gilt and ‘of definitely Gupta workmanship’. We have earlier mentioned the Buddhist bronze images from sixth-seventh century AD Sirpur, Madhya Pradesh, one of which was gilt.
