Dharmapāla patronised the Nālandā school of bronze icon tradition. This Pāla art flourished even further during his son Devapāla’s reign (AD 818-58). It is most likely that the internationally famous Pāla sculptors might have assisted the Nagapattinam artistes since we find that the best icons were made in the latter site starting from the early Cola period (AD 871 onwards up to AD 1070).
