The vast Vedic literature following the Ṛgveda was compiled between 2000 to 800 BC in the valleys of the Gaṅgā and Yamunā. The Brāhmaṇas explain the verses in the Vedas and codify the rituals. The later day Sūtras describe the rituals in a serial order. Quite naturally, the studies on the material universe were picked up from the point the Ṛgveda left them.
