Skanda Purāṇa reported (SP, 23. 105-106) that the oyster pearl samples were given different names depending upon their colour and lustre : vaiṣṇava (blue), māhendra (yellow), yāmya (cloud-colour), vāyavya (red), āgneya (slight red) and vāruṇa (pure and white).
