AD 1300-1600 period has been labelled as the era of Indian Iatro-chemistry during which many contacts were established with the Arab alchemy. During this period, the tradition of European alchemy was evolved mainly due to the efforts of Paracelsus (AD 1490-1541). The evolved Indian rasaśāstra texts such as Rasaratnasamuccaya described a number of chemical substances under the titles mahārasas, uparasas, dhātus, etc. and also several apparatus for synthesis and purification of these materials.
