*Iolite* : Cordierite. Mg₂Al₄Si₅O₁₈. Sometimes Mg replaced by Fe²⁺. Shades of blue. Sri Lanka has a transparent variety in small rolled masses of an intense blue colour, the *saphir d'eau* of jewellers. 'Iolite' stands for violet stone. The name Cordierite is after Cordier, the French geologist.
