The *Aṣṭāṅgahṛdaya* is by far the most concise and scientific exposition of Āyurvedic knowledge, incorporating the teachings of the Ātreya, Dhanvantari and Rasāyanaa schools of medicine and distinguished by its knowledge of chemical reactions and laboratory processes. The work has been translated into many Indian and foreign languages, and enjoys a deserved reputation rivalling those of Caraka and Suśruta. The important commentaries on Vāgbhaṭa’s works are by Aruṇadatta (thirteenth century), Candrānanda, Hemādri and Indu.
