¹ Compare what Āpastamba says: *uktam* "said," "stated" or "described;" meaning that the method of construction has been described before. This can be further confirmed by referring to what Āpastamba has written in the rule just preceding the one under discussion (i. 3). After stating the dimensions of the sides and the diagonal of the rectangle to be used, *viz*., (*a*, 3*a*/4, 5*a*/4), Āpastamba observes *vyākhyātaṃ viharaṇam*, "the method of construction has been (already) described (in the preceding rule)."
