The earliest epigraphical record of the use of zero is found in the Râgholi plates¹ of Jaivardhana II of the eighth century. The Gwalior inscriptions of the reign of Bhojadeva² also contain zero. The form of the symbol in these inscriptions is the small circle. This is the form that has been in common use from quite early times, probably from before the eighth century.
