We are at present unable to say definitely whether this method is a Hindu invention or was borrowed from the Arabs who are said to have used it in the 13th century.³ It occurs in some Arab works of the 14th century, and also in Europe about the same time. Gaṇeśa was undoubtedly one of the best mathematicians of his time and the fact that he identified this method with the *kapâṭa-sandhi* which is the oldest known method shows that the gelosia method must have been in use in India from a long time before him.
