**The Operation.** A method of cubing applicable to numbers written in the decimal place-value notation, has been in use in India from before the fifth century A.D. Āryabhaṭa I (499) knew the method, although he did not consider it to be as important as the inverse operation of extracting the cube-root which he has explained.
