Of the above terms for the "root," *mûla* is the oldest. It occurs in the *Anuyogadvâra-sûtra* (*c.* 100 B.C.), and in all the mathematical works. The term *pada* seems to have come into use later on, *i.e.*, from the seventh century A.D. It occurs first in the work of Brahmagupta (628).
