Bhâskara II (1150) says, "Those (known and unknown numbers) which are negative should be written with a dot (*bindu*) over them."¹ A similar remark occurs in the algebra of Nârâyaṇa (1350).² Their silence about symbols of other fundamental operations proves their non-existence.
