"Half the denominator divided by its numerator is increased or diminished by the quantity to be subtracted or added. The square of this is diminished by the square of the quantity to be subtracted or added and by the remainder. The square-root of the result *added to or subtracted from* the square-root (of the square obtained before) and divided by the fractional part, will be the value (of the unknown)."²
