Certain rules have been framed to show what moments prove beneficial if selected for performing the sanctifying ceremony of impregnation, for starting on journeys and for several other functions concerning every day life; and the moments thus selected are technically known as 'muhūrtas'. Formerly, the consideration of such muhūrtas formed part of the samhitā works; but later on all other subjects in the samhitā lost their importance and ceased to exist, while 'Muhūrta' became their most dominant feature. Later, still, the works related to the selection of Muhūrtas came to be styled 'Muhurta-works'.
