TRITICUM VULGARE, Linn. Three varieties of wheat are mentioned in the Bhávaprakása, namely Mahágodhuma or large grained, Madhuli or small grained¹ and Nihsuki or beardless, that is without awn. The first variety is said to come from the west and the second to be indigenous to the middle region comprising the modern provinces of Allahabad, Agra, Delhi, Oudh, etc. Wheat is considered the most nutritive of the food-grains, but less easily digested than rice.
