² Gandhāra is mentioned in the first inscription of Darius (Behistan) as one of the provinces under, or brought under, his authority after the rebellions that followed in the wake of Cyrus' death. Moreover, it is known that Cyrus had taken Kapiśī specifically on the route to Gandhāra, cf., A Foucher, *La vieille route de l'Inde*, Vol. II, Paris, 1947, pp. 192-93.
