There exist two recensions of Charaka's statement. One is contained in the edition of the Compendium which was printed by Jīvānanda Vidyāsagara in Calcutta in 1877, where it is found on page 370, lines 5–19. The other occurs in Gangādhar's edition, page 186, lines 11–22, printed in Berhampore, 1879 (*Bahrampura, saṃvat* 1936). These two recensions differ so widely from each other that it is necessary to inquire into their respective authorities.
