forms one of the eight subjects of medicine (Āyurveda) and Suśruta places it at the head of the same. He particularly points out the special importance of Śalya (Su 1.1.3 ff.). The more important operations like laparatomy, stone, cataract etc. shall be described later on while dealing with the diseases concerned. Here, therefore, only certain general observations may be made.
