¹ The diameter of the ecliptic is the distance *Cs* or *At* (Plate V) between the intersections on the meridian line N S of the tropics of Capricorn and Cancer. The graduations of the ecliptic lie on the line joining the pole of the ecliptic to the corresponding graduations on the equator. The pole of the equator is, of course, at the centre of the disc, while the pole of the ecliptic is at a distance from the pole of the equator equal to the maximum declination (approximately 23½°). It is sometimes marked *Quṭb al-burūj*.
