After the visits of these Chinese pilgrims we have but scanty evidence as to the course and development of Buddhist education in India, but the monasteries long continued as centres of education and literary study, and only decayed as Buddhism itself decayed in India. Dr. S. C. Vidyabhusana ¹ mentions the following mediæval centres of Buddhist learning, namely, Kāñchīpura,² Nālanda, Odantapurī,³ Śrī Dhanyakataka, Kāśmīra, and Vikramaśilā.
