The record of Jalāluddīn’s work was soiled by the assassination of the great literary man of the age, Sayyid Maulā, who first established an academy at Delhi in the time of Balban. Sayyid Maulā was very pious and learned. His charity found expression in his alms-house for the entertainment of *faqīrs*, travellers and poor men of all denominations. His charities were very large, and among his disciples and followers were many nobles and princes. The Sulṭān’s eldest son, Khān Khānān, used to visit him and call himself the Sayyid’s son. The Sayyid was, however, suspected of plotting with his disciples against the Sulṭān and was done away with.
