Sulṭān Maḥmūd, notorious as an iconoclast, had one great redeeming feature in his character. He was a great patron of learning and a staunch friend of learned men. But a bigoted Musalmān as he was, he did not care to encourage the learned men of any other faith, or to foster the education of the people of any other persuasion.
