Three of these were in possession of extensive governments at the time of Muḥammad’s death: Quṭbuddīn in India, Yaldūz in Ghaznī, and Naṣīruddīn Qubāchah in Multān and Sindh.³ It appears that in the instruction of these *protégés* of his, he used to combine a literary education with a training in the difficult art of practical government, which was essential to princes.
