At the time of Ferishta, it was the general belief that Ḥasan Gangu Bahmanī was the first Brāhmaṇa who accepted service under a Muhammadan prince, and that before his time the study of the *Vedas* and the duties of religion were the Brāhmaṇas’ only pursuit. Though as physicians, astronomers, metaphysicians or historians, they sometimes mixed with the rich and powerful, they never consented to take regular service. The acceptance of office by Gangu marks the period whence the management of the revenue was invariably entrusted to them by all the Deccan kings.²
