These diseases are due to derangements (vaiguṇya) of air, water, country and season.¹⁴ Preventive measures are described. Deviations from the dharma are the basic cause of epidemics (3.3–20), and, further, war, attacks by rākṣasas and afflictions caused by curses (3.21–23).
