Ātreya expounds his views on the life span, which is determined (niyata) or undetermined (aniyata), and dependent on the relative strength of daiva (i.e., one’s deeds in previous lives) and puruṣakāra (one’s deeds in the present life) (3.29–36);¹⁶ he also explains the causes of timely and untimely death (kāla- and akālamṛtyu) (3.38).¹⁷
