v1.c17.44
The nature, style and contents of the earlier treatises, ascribed to Agniveśa and Caraka, 118 on which Dṛḍhabala’s text is based, is largely a matter of speculation. The date of Caraka’s revision of the Agniveśatantra depends on the availability of reliable internal and external evidence. Early quotations dating from before Dṛḍhabala’s times, which might prove that a medical author called Caraka was known, are entirely lacking. 119
