S. Dasgupta’s assertion²⁰⁰ that the *Nyāyasūtras* drew their ideas on the pramāṇas from Caraka’s work cannot seriously be defended. It seems reasonable to regard the material on the pramāṇas in the *Carakasaṃhitā* as belonging to a period before the establishment and codification of the doctrines which are peculiar to each of the darśanas, in particular as anterior to the time in which the *Nyāyasūtras* took their final form,²⁰¹ i.e., probably around the second century A.D.²⁰²
