The relationship between the *Carakasaṃhitā* and the Vaiśeṣika system is remarkable because key concepts of Vaiśeṣika are dealt with in the very first chapter of the *Carakasaṃhitā* and are employed, applied to medicine, throughout the treatise. The way in which these concepts are defined and made use of closely resembles, without being exactly the same, their definitions and uses in the *Vaiśeṣikasūtras*.²⁰⁹
