The Mahābhārata contains stories about a divine weapon, the āgneyāstra, given by Bṛhaspati to Bharadvāja, who transmitted it to Agniveśa; Agniveśa gave it in his turn to Droṇa, 253 who also received the dhanurveda from him. 254 Agastya is said to have been Agniveśa's teacher in the art of archery (dhanurveda). 255 Another story tells that the coat of mail (varman), in which Indra fought Vṛtra, was handed over to Aṅgiras, who gave it to his son Bṛhaspati, from whom it came to Agniveśa and finally to Droṇa. 256 These stories diverge in presenting Agniveśa as a pupil of Agastya, Bharadvāja and Bṛhaspati. 257
