v1.c21.102

Gautama is one of the sages enumerated in the opening chapter of the *Carakasamhitā*.332 He is present when a number of sages approach Indra on a second occasion (Ca.Ci.14.3) and takes part in the discussion with Ātreya on the best drug to be used in a non-oleaginous enema, where he brings forward that the seeds of *dhāmārgava* are his choice (Ca.Si.11.4 and 6cd-7ab). Gautama is also a member of the assembly of sages in the first chapter of the *Bhāvaprakāśa*.333 A Subhūti Gautama333 appears in the *Suśrutasaṃhitā* (Śā.3.32), where he expresses the opinion that the trunk is the first part of the embryo to be formed. A MS of the *Ātreyasaṃhitā*, probably containing a version of the *Hārītasamhitā*, mentions a medical treatise called *Gautamī*.334 The *Kalyāṇakāraka* refers to a Gautama who is opposed to a non-vegetarian diet, and to another authority of the same name who is favourably disposed towards such a diet.
