K.R. Srikantha Murthy 187 advanced that Vāgbhaṭa was born as a brāhmaṇa, was educated and lived according to the Hindu dharma in his early life, and embraced Buddhism later. He mentions Varāhamihira as another example of the same type of development. The same scholar maintained this position in a later publication, 188 where he brings forward that Vāgbhaṭa shows equal reverence for Hinduism and Buddhism.
