v1.c26.s3.34
Differences of opinion arose concerning the issue whether the Saṃgraha or the Hṛdaya, both usually regarded as works of Vāgbhaṭa, should be regarded as the winning card. These discussions on the most likely candidate could originate because of the weakness of the arguments determining Hoernle’s choice of the Saṃgraha. First, his late dating of the Hṛdaya is wrong; second, the title of that work, which is often seen as an epitome of the Saṃgraha, is not less apt; third, evidence that the Saṃgraha ever enjoyed popularity is completely absent. Jolly’s perception of the situation testifies to more perspicacity, but got less attention, possibly due to the, undeserved, reputation of Hoernle.
